Market Harborough Medical Centre is a designated training practice for doctors training to become GPs under the Vocational Training Scheme (GP Registrars).  We will tell you if your appointment is wtih a GP Registrar or student, or if they will be present during your consultation with your doctor.   If you prefer to see your GP privately, please let us know, it will not cause offence.

Minor Illness Nurses

The role of the minor illness nurse is to take on the appraisal, diagnosis and treatment of minor illness within general practice.  Nurses provide 80% of direct patient care, most peoples experience of the Health Service begins and ends with a nurse.  Nurses are now seen as confident, forward looking professionals with enormous protential to prevent disease, provide high quality care for the sick and to promote healthy lifestyle.

Practice Nurses

Many patients are looked after by our highly trained nurses in a variety of clinics e.g. asthma, heart and diabetic clinics. Many of our nurses have undergone special training and are now able to prescribe medicines in the same way as doctors.

We now have nurses who look after patients who have suffered a stroke, patients with mental health problems, patients who have kidney problems and those with high blood pressure. If you suffer with one of these problems you may be invited to see one of these nurses.

Business Manager
Responsible for financial and legal matters, liaising with the PCT and other agencies.  Has overall responsibility for all staff made up of full-time and part-time management, administration, reception and nursing staff.

Secretarial, Administration and IT

The small secretarial team prepare thousands of referrals to secondary care every year using high-tech computer links. The bulk of GP referrals are to the Market Harborough and District Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester and the Kettering General Hospital although patients can have their choice of hospitals subject to speciality. In addition the secretaries distribute the daily correspondence, expedite reports, request medical notes, organise disability claims, arrange private referrals and a multitude of other duties besides.

Administratively the team ensure the smooth financial running of the organisation by preparing and paying the many invoices you would expect with such a busy practice. There is a constant flow of services, supplies and equipment through the practice which is procured at best price and which is required to service the regular needs of clinicians and patients alike. The whole practice is heavily reliant upon IT, as with every modern business, and we have dedicated personnel to operate and maintain the systems and backups. The introduction of new electronic systems has helped speed up the requests, reporting and analysis of results out of and into the practice. The system also allows clinicians to know exactly the needs of patients and helps the management and review of their medication and illnesses in a timely and effective manner. IT is fast changing and the Medical Centre is keen to continue to develop its services through this medium.

Summarisers

The Practice Summarisers ensure that new patients to the Practice have all the important medical information from their paper notes entered onto the computer as soon as possible upon receipt of the records. This allows the Doctor to have a overview of the patients medical history. It is also the future aim to have all the existing patient records summarised many of which have already been completed.

Our team of receptionists strive to provide a friendly, efficient and effective reception service to patients. They arrange on average 1600 doctors appointments per week, together with around 1000 nurses appointments which includes setting up and co-ordinating clinics. They ensure that each appointment is directed to the most appropriate clinic/clinician and that patients are advised of any tests and samples required in advance. The team is also responsible for issuing prescriptions and dealing with any queries relating to them. Patients who wish to use the on-line appointments/repeat prescription ordering system are issued with a password and their details logged accordingly.

The Practice has approximately 25 new patients per week and each patient is set up on our systems and their details are subsequently forwarded to the Health Authority.

Other reception duties include dealing with patient enquiries, general administration to support doctors including assisting with the Choose and Book referral system, ensuring all documentation is filed/recorded in a timely and efficient manner and a multitude of other tasks.

Community Physiotherapists

Offer assessment, advice and treatment for adult patients requiring rehabilitation at home, if they are unable to attend an out-patient department. Referrals can only be made by GP's or other health care professionals.

School Nurses

The School Nurses specialise in the health and well being of the school age population. They offer health advice, run the enuresis clinic and deal with child protection. Our Dispensary team comprise of three professionally trained Dispensers supported by a technician currently undertaking training at NVQ Level 2 in Dispensing. They, together with reception/administration support, dispense thousands of items each month to over 3000 patients in the villages surrounding the town. The work is strictly regulated and organised to ensure optimum turn around whilst maintaining high levels of accuracy and prompt delivery.

For those patients on a regular 28 day supply of medication the dispensary offer a monthly medicine management service allowing patients a regular collection service elimininating the worry of remembering to re-order their drugs. For those without access to the internet, repeat prescriptions can be re-ordered via fax, royal mail or by hand. We endeavour to resupply patients with their medication within 48 hours of receiving a request but it helps our stock management if patients give us a few days notice were possible.
